‘Spot on and timely’, to enact cyberbully law in Malaysia

The proposal for a study on the need for specific laws to fight cyberbullying by the Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah dated September 22, 2020 is commendable, spot on and timely considering the wide use of the Internet and its application nowadays.

 

It is hoped that this study can be carried out as fast as it could considering this cyberbullying case is not easy to prevent and investigate, and what more bringing the culprits to the court of law. Read more here

Participative education and continuous awareness required to successfully fight online scam

Malaysian Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has reminded the public to be more alert, not easily panic and check before making any financial transactions to avoid being a victim of an online scam, reported Bernama.

Recently, several cases of people being swindled huge sums of money, including a teacher who lost RM112,000 in a ‘love scam’, and a 90-year-old retiree who was conned of RM3.83 million in a Macau scam.

He was informing the public ‘to be more alert, to not easily panic, and to check before making any financial transactions’ when presenting the 13th LAKSANA report on the implementation of the Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package (PRIHATIN) and National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA). On July 13, during the Malaysian parliament Question and Answer (Q&A) session, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions), Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, proposed to set up a digital platform to enhance cyber security capabilities.

The idea was mooted after an increase in hacking cases during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

The platform will be launched within the next five years.

The Minister revealed that “it is in the stage of developing it and it will be launched within five years. It will be created through the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).” Read more here
