Similar to how there are two sides of a coin, the advent of technology too presents us with the bright side and the dark side, and it all depends on how we utilise technology.
We are all too familiar with the pros of technology, but did you also know that with a few strokes of a keyboard, nations can be held at ransom, companies can be crippled, and individuals could find themselves caught in a situation only because of some unrighteous individual or underground organisation launched a cyberattack?
cybersecurityventures.com reported last year that cybercrime is predicted to inflict damages totalling USD$6 trillion globally in 2021. Surely, prevention is better than cure. Furthermore, prevention comes in the form of having a robust cyber security infrastructure and a society that is aware of the importance of cybersecurity.
This thought has led to AustCyber and Western Australian Innovation Hub hosting a two-day Cyber West Summit happening today and tomorrow at the Pan Pacific Perth, Australia. Themed “Cyber Enabled Industry”, the summit aims to create a multi-stakeholder gathering that brings together industry, government and academic interests in an effort to improve the state of cyber security on both a domestic and international level.
While the CEO of AustCyber, Michelle Price said, “While everything has changed, everything hasn’t as well” and that they are still growing amazing cybersecurity companies in Western Australia and nationally.
“Now the needle has shifted not just in case of us becoming more aware of cyber risk but how cyber risk has upsized as well as downsized. We have seen lots more of reporting in the media now about the downsizing of cyber risks that actually we are very well poised and need to lean in more to the conversation around how cyber resilience and digital trust opens up volumes of opportunities,” she further added.
The Cyber West Summit featuring a mix of speakers from various sectors and industries, provides Western Australia with an opportunity to showcase to the world its capabilities in terms of its cyber sector and some of the amazing innovative products that they have in Perth, while allowing Australians to realize just how crucial cybersecurity is to protecting not just them as individuals but basically adopting it as a way of life.
