One of the biggest social media platforms called Facebook, is planning to change their company name next week.
According to an anonymous source, the reason behind this change is to reflect the company focus on building the metaverse.
The metaverse refers to shared virtual world environments which people can access via the internet. The term can refer to digital spaces which are made more lifelike using virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR).
Now, people interact with one another online by going to websites such as social media platforms or using messaging applications.
The idea of the metaverse is that it will create new online spaces in which people’s interactions can be more multi-dimensional, where users are able to immerse themselves in digital content rather than simply viewing it.
The chief executive officer (CEO) of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, plans to speak about at the company’s annual Connect conference about the upcoming name change on next Thursday but it could be announced earlier, it is meant to signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than just business and social networks.
Like Alphabet, which is Google’s creation in 2015, a rebranded Facebook could probably create an umbrella business enterprise that oversees the Facebook app, in addition to Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus, amongst others.
Facebook already has more than 10,000 employees building the consumer hardware like Augmented Reality (AR) glasses that Zuckerberg believes will eventually be as used everywhere like smartphones.
The hired employees are also used to fill in highly skilled roles working on Horizon Worlds, a 3D virtual play space for over the next five years.
Now, everyone is going online throwing suggestion of names for the new Facebook. What about you? Comment below on what you think the new Facebook name should be.
