Organisations nowadays mostly collect data from their customers in order to fulfill their needs and a few collect their employee’s data for security purposes.

However, with so much data collected, it also raises questions, what kind of data are actually being collected and could this data affect our privacy?

Dr. Carrine Teoh, Chief Strategy Officer, Bond Holdings Malaysia, states that basically anything about data collection it involves a lot of things, from the national IDs, date of birth, history, health pattern, health history and extensive usage of the Internet of Things (IoT). In short there are a lot of sensory data been collected.

She further added that in terms of the workplace itself, organisation are also collecting information from employees and also talking about collection of data from customers.

“So a lot of those data are things we need to look at. We need to know how much data is enough? How much are they entitled to collect? Do you need that much data?

“That also falls back to once the data is collected, how are they processing the data? How are they retaining the data? Are they making sure we have CIA for the data?

“Are they managing well about security and so forth? I suppose that for businesses, when you collect data for the employees or be it the customers, it is the responsibility of the organisation to ensure the security of the data collected,” she said.

They have to look into how to protect the data that they have because any data breach nowadays is an invasion of privacy and it will also jeopardize trust within an organisation.
