people are vulnerable to cyber attacks

On the Cultural Cyber Security website, Brian Hay is described as an individual who has a rare blend of cyber security skills and business attributes.  Long considered a Thought Leader in the world of Cyber Security, Brian learned his craft not from the technical demands of the industry but rather by focusing on the activities of organized crime , cyber attacks, and cyber criminals.

This description aptly describes Brian as he is certainly knowledgeable in this field and it was deftly presented during his session at the Cyber Security Asia conference that takes place today and tomorrow. Titled “People Centric Security: Why It Is More Important Than Ever”, Brian – using various media – creatively explained why very creatively explained how and why people are the most important factor when it comes to cybersecurity.

People, Brian explained are at the very core organization and they are an establishment’s greatest asset but that asset too very quickly can become the greatest risk. He also went on to explain that everyone learns differently, and that people are an establishment’s greatest defense.

From his presentation, participants learnt that 96% to 99% of all attacks launched are targeting people – this is a staggering number and makes one question if people are indeed that susceptible. The rest of his findings are also shocking because it states that 86 per cent of credentials are obtained via phishing emails while 65% of hacks are utilizing compromised credentials, this is apart from the insider threats.

From here, it is obvious that the human element is a great vulnerability. The presentation also outlined that most of the crimes are executed organized crimes, hactivism, nation-sponsored activities, cyber terrorism, and lone wolf. Some of the objectives of these crimes are to make money while not getting caught committing a crime and to launder the ill-gotten gains.

With so much to gain, is it a wonder that cyber crimes are increasing year after year? The answer is a big fat no.

In fact, Brian goes on to add that cyber crime is destined to grow and rapidly too. The reasons for this are simple because cyber crime is an unknown quantity and that it is seldom reported. Brian also showed respect for these cyber criminals when he said cyber criminals are industrialized and equipped with international networks in real time. It also helps that most cyber criminals are overseas and conduct their activities on other parts of the world. This guarantees that they will never be caught.

If you are connected to the Internet, you are already compromised, so take every necessary precautions to keep your online experience safe and secure.
