The Covid-19 pandemic that left almost no part of the world untouched, has forced many to take their offline activities be it professional or personal online.

When it comes to the working sphere many new jargon and strategies including cloud storage have been implemented to keep their workforce safe while allowing productivity to continue as per normal. Work from home was one of the policies implemented.

One of the challenges that comes from working from home is the convenience of storing data and accessing data especially when there are various parties and divisions involved. One of the most effective methods of storing company data, files, and documents is to store them in cloud. Cloud storage, according to AWS is a cloud computing model that stores data on the Internet through a cloud computing provider who manages and operates data storage as a service.

It’s delivered on demand with just-in-time capacity and costs, and eliminates buying and managing your own data storage infrastructure. This gives you agility, global scale and durability, with “anytime, anywhere” data access, explains AWS.

Cloud storage sounds like the perfect solution but what happens when you migrate to cloud without a strategy or roadmap? What are the risks that comes with it? We asked Junaid Farooqui from Extransec, UK to give his overview at the Cyber Security Asia 2021 Conference.

As a senior leader and a public speaker in the IT & Cyber Security, Junaid who has worked for various sectors such as Banking, Insurance, Transport, Health, Councils, Utility and Media, explained to participants the security risks in migration.

Some of the risk factors are targeting operating model will not cater key security principles, there could be duplication of technology and processes. Apart from that, he also stated that cloud migration without a roadmap could be less efficient and time consuming and that the operational costs might be too high. Other reasons given by Junaid are the to-be posture of security will be weak and less effective and there would be gaps in IT Governance.

During his presentation, Junaid also said that sometimes organizations rush into cloud migration without a roadmap or strategy because from a business point-of-view, cloud storage is cost effective and it is currently the trend as many companies have used the pandemic period to establish some new operations that would elevate their productivity and also put their companies ahead of their competitors.

This way, companies who propose cutting-edge initiatives could be setting the bar for others to follow suit. Most also want to adopt the cloud storage as it makes it convenient for acquiring services. Junaid also explained that for some firms it is to enhance their business growth and customer experience.
